Consisting of 20 letters, 1851-1852, written by family members to Henry DeSaussure "Hal" Fraser while he was in Paris, France, pursuing medical studies; topics include family news, and discussion of the secession crisis of the early 1850s. Letters discuss family and community news, comments on crops and weather, Medical Convention and the convention of the Southern Rights Associations in Charleston, S.C., and promises and enclosures of financial assistance; 6 letters discuss illness and death of Fraser's father, Frederick Grimke Fraser, on 29 Jan. 1852 in Charleston, S.C.; and 3 documents written in French re financial matters. Also includes later letters, , from Fraser to his fiancee, later wife, Jane E. Ladson; letter, 2 Apr. 1859, initially chiding Jane for the formality of her previous letter's salutation and describing a wedding in which he had participated as a groomsman, with description of the bride's dress and the reception at which "champagne and punch circulated freely"; and letter, 6 April 1860, complimenting his wife for improvement in her writing, referencing health problems affecting them both, and noting to a visit from Dr. Geddings.
